django-seo-cascade

This project addresses the following issues:

  1. Sitemap generation. Sitemap generation often involves a lot of boilerplate configuration. We would like to automate as much of this as possible. Also, clients need to be able to control the sitemap, and they cannot be expected to edit Django's sitemap classes directly.
  2. Meta tag configuration. Meta tags don't always conform to the Django template blocks paradigm. "block.super" helps, but sometimes it's better to update only one tag without replacing every item in the block. A better solution would be a series of cascading values, like CSS overrides for tags. Clients will also need to be able to edit the meta tags on a per-page basis.

Project goals:

  1. Give developers precise, efficient method of adding meta content via Django templates.
  2. Give site admins control of meta-data on a per-page basis.
  3. Automatically handle sitemap generation.
  4. Give site admins control of the sitemap on a per-model and per-page basis.

Installation

from the command line:

pip install django-seo-cascade

Add django-seo to middleware:

MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES = (
		...
    'seo_cascade.middleware.SEOMiddleware',
)

Admin Overrides

Seo_cascade > Seo page overrides

path: the absolute path, relative to the domain, for which you want to override the meta content. Also supports regular expressions.

example: "/blog/posts/23/" matches http://example.com/blog/posts/23/

"/blog/posts/[\d]+/" matches all numbered posts under http://example.com/blog/posts/

title: generates a title tag for the specified path(s)

example: "Example Blog" becomes

<title>Example Blog</title>

description: generates a description tags for the specified path(s)

example: "'What's happened to me?' he thought. It wasn't a dream." becomes

<meta property="description" content="'What's happened to me?' he thought. It wasn't a dream.">
<meta property="og:description" content="'What's happened to me?' he thought. It wasn't a dream.">

image: serves uploaded image from the media directory, generates image tags for the specified path(s)

Omit from sitemap: exclude this entry from the sitemap.

Meta override HTML: HTML meta tags that take highest precedence.

Seo_cascade > Seo model defaults

model: A Django model class.

Omit from sitemap: exclude all detail views of this model from the sitemap.

Change Frequency: the interval at which search engines should check for updates.

Sitemap

The sitemap generator automatically creates sitemap entries for each model with a "get_absolute_url" method. From the admin, sitemap settings (priority, changefreq) can be set for each model, or the model can be omitted from the sitemap completely.

The sitemap is updated each time a model is saved that hasn't been omitted from the sitemap.

Precedence

Meta tag settings take the following precedence:

  1. Admin path overrides.

    1. "Meta HTML" fields
    2. "title", "description", and "image" fields
  2. Template {% meta %} blocks.

Side effects

The following entry will be automatically appended to the django url conf:

url(r'^sitemap\.xml$', 'django.contrib.sitemaps.views.sitemap', {'sitemaps': sitemaps})
