Distant Horizons: Digital Evidence and Literary Change

DOI

Code and data supporting the book manuscript, Distant Horizons (Ted Underwood, forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press in Spring 2019).

Most of the code and data for this project has been organized by chapter, so for many inquiries, a particular chapter folder may be the place to start. I would also draw readers' attention to the folder for appendix A, which contains general reflections on the level of error to be expected, and the limits of reproducibility in this repository.

Do we understand the outlines of literary history?

The lifespans of genres.

The long arc of prestige.

Metamorphoses of gender.

chapter5

The risks of distant reading. Not included in the repo, because there's no supporting data.

This may be the place to start if you're thinking about attempting to reproduce a particular result. The readme file in the folder is a general guide to reproducing results, and the folder itself includes code used for word-counting.

Includes one illustration.
