RarangiRatonga - Distributed Service Catalogue protocol, server and libraries. A service catalogue allows a service to register its address, and clients to request the addresses of a service. The service catalogues are distributed on all hosts in a set of clusters and communicate among each other to replicate the complete database of services among each other. The following design principles are important: - Minimum configuration - Fail-save - It should work on a 3rd party cluster like Amazon's EC2 which has no ability for multi-casting - Strict separation of production, test and development environments. Minimum Configuration --------------------- Each host will run service catalogues on well known port numbers for each well known environment. This allows both a client and a service to contact a service catalogue without configuration. Well known environments are: - production - staging - testing - development The client and servers need to be configured with the name of environment. Client and servers may also be configured to contact a specific catalogue server, useful for individual development environments. The catalogue servers are started with the name of the environment, name of the cluster, the address:port to bind on, and the address:port of one or more neighbour catalogue servers for database replication. Fail-save --------- Each host should run two catalogue servers for each environment. This allows one of the catalogue servers to be reconfigured and restarted, while the other can continue serving client and services. When designing how the catalogue servers peer with each other it is recommended to let each catalogue server in a cluster connect to two 'master' catalogue servers. And let all 'master' catalogue connect to each other. This allows a net-split to be detected reliable but also robust enough when a server fails or is shutdown for maintenance. Connection which are broken should be reestablished within a few seconds with an exponential back-off up to a maximum of 5 minutes. Services keep a connection open to the catalogue server to keep it registration, when the connection is lost the registration is deleted quickly from the database. This way when a service is shutdown or fails or the connection is automatically broken. No multicast ------------ Separation of environments -------------------------- A catalogue server will communicate to everything that connects to it the environment for which it is configured. If the environment doesn't match the connecting application should shut down the connection immediately and log the error.
