Coconut Shell (formerly "Shell 2"), a Bash-like shell implemented in Python, with an optional integrated terminal GUI. Will potentially become the successor to pola-shell in Plash, but it initially aims to be a non-POLA shell.

= Coconut Shell =

Coconut Shell is a Bash-like command shell implemented in Python, with
optional integrated terminal GUI.


== Integrated shell + terminal ==

Coconut Shell provides an integrated shell and terminal.  Unlike GUI
shells like Hotwire, it is intended to look and behave just like Bash
running under gnome-terminal, with the exception that additional
features are provided through the GUI.

How it works:

 * It uses libvte to provide the terminal emulator widget.  This is
   the same library that gnome-terminal uses.
 * It uses Pyrepl (a replacement for GNU readline) to read lines from
   the terminal.  This provides line editing and filename completion.
 * It launches each command under a separate pty (pseudo-tty), and it
   forwards output and input to and from the terminal widget.  This
   helps prevent separate commands from interfering with each other.
   Peculiarities of Unix job control mean that we need a helper
   process (setsid_helper.py) to launch subprocesses with new
   controlling ttys.


== Requirements ==

Dependencies for shell + terminal:
 * Python 2.5
 * python-gtk2
 * python-vte (bindings for libvte)
 * pyrepl, branch from http://github.com/mseaborn/pyrepl/

The standalone shell has fewer dependencies.  It can use pyrepl, but
will fall back to using readline if pyrepl is not available.  It
requires python-gobject, but not python-gtk2.


== Getting started ==

Install dependencies:
sudo apt-get install python-pyparsing python-gtk2 python-vte

Get development version of Pyrepl:
git clone git://github.com/mseaborn/pyrepl.git pyrepl-repo
ln -s pyrepo-repo/pyrepl pyrepl

Run the terminal:
python terminal.py

Run the standalone shell:
python shell.py


== Features ==

Advantages over Bash + separate terminal:

 * Fast to start up.  Fast to open new tabs.

 * Opening new tabs preserves the current directory without expanding
   symlinks.  gnome-terminal tries to preserve the cwd but it gets it
   from its subprocess's /proc/PID/cwd, which expands symlinks.

 * Job completion notifications:  The terminal will highlight its
   taskbar icon when a command completes (via a window manager hint),
   similar to how Jabber clients highlight their icons when a new
   message is received.  Tab labels are similarly highlighted.  This
   is a killer feature for me.

 * Command history is stored in an Sqlite database.  Unlike Bash's
   command history, it does not get truncated (though of course you
   can run an SQL statement to drop history), and it does not get lost
   on a crash.  For context, it includes the time the command was run
   and the current directory.

 * Written in a high-level language, Python.  Easier to modify.  Less
   likely to crash and take all terminal instances with it.

 * "Job To Background" option in right-click menu:  Forces the current
   job to the background.  Works even if the job has blocked all
   signals (such as Ctrl-Z) - does not require the job's co-operation.

 * Fake-Sudo feature:  If the shell is run as root and $SUDO_USER is
   set, you get the following bonus feature:  Commands are run as the
   user specified by $SUDO_USER, unless they are prefixed with "sudo",
   in which case they are run as root.

   This is a small step towards applying the principle of least
   authority (POLA).  It is intended to protect you, the user, from
   programs you run.

   For some use cases, this can be more secure and more convenient
   than the real "sudo" command.  Laxer sudo setups (with a non-zero
   timeout or NOPASSWD) create a hole whereby non-root processes can
   run commands as root; Coconut Shell's fake sudo avoids creating
   this hole (though it would still be vulnerable to X11 keypress
   injection).  Stricter sudo setups ask for passwords frequently;
   Coconut Shell's fake sudo does not ask for a password.


== Future plans ==

There are a number of potential advantages that have not been realised yet:

 * GUI integration.
   - Listing jobs
   - Filename completions in a pop-up window
   - Searching through command history

 * Running each job with a freshly-created controlling tty gives
   potential benefits.
   - Silencing backgrounded jobs so that their output does not go to
     the terminal window.
   - Recording command output by default.

 * Examining shell state in GUI, e.g. environment variables

 * Recording more job state:  time taken, command exit status.

 * Integration of chroot and ssh.

 * Integration of GNU screen.  This would simply require a way of
   saving and restoring the VTE terminal widget's state.  Even that is
   not strictly necessary if you don't mind losing the screen's
   contents (e.g. as Xen's "xm console" will do).

 * Integration with Plash, as a replacement for Plash's pola-shell.

 * Extensibility in Python.  The hooks don't exist yet.


== Missing shell features ==

The main disadvantage of using this shell is that it lacks many of
Bash's features.  Coconut Shell is intended to be an interactive
shell, not a programming language.  For example, it lacks the "for"
syntax.  This is not a big problem, because you can always do
"bash -c '...'".

This could be an argument for changing the design to run Bash as a
subprocess, feeding it commands while keeping readline (Pyrepl) in the
terminal.  However, I am ambivalent towards Bash's huge collection of
features.

Coconut Shell also lacks some of gnome-terminal's features, such as
GUI configuration options.


== Known bugs ==

The terminal does not always display correctly when opening a new tab.
This is a bug in the VTE widget (libvte).  Resizing the window or
producing further output (e.g. by typing) makes the window display
correctly.  This is fixed in newer versions of libvte (including
0.20.5 in Ubuntu karmic).

The test suite sometimes fails non-deterministically.


== sudo's per-tty password check - workaround ==

Often sudo is set up so that it does not ask for a password if the
password has been entered recently.  But sometimes this only applies
if the password was entered recently *on the same tty device*.
Coconut Shell interferes with this because it creates a new tty device
for every command rather than using one per terminal window.  This
means that sudo will always ask for a password.

To disable sudo's per-tty feature, add the following line to
/etc/sudoers:

Defaults        !tty_tickets   


== Similar tools ==

gsh - Quite old (from 1999).  Written in Tcl using Tk.  Implements its
own terminal emulator.  Appears to feed commands to Bash.
