Materials and Data for Mollica and Piantadosi (submitted). An incremental information-theoretic buffer supports sentence processing.

Send me an email (mollicaf@gmail.com) for the pre-processed article excerpts used in the task or pre-process them yourself:

Tom Bissell (2008). The grammar of fun. The New Yorker
Nick Paumgarten (2008). Up and then down. The New Yorker
Elizabeth Kolbert (2008). The island in the wind. The New Yorker
Todd Oppenheimer (2008). Sharper. The New Yorker

---Inventory---

run.py - requires Psychopy. Script for presentation and data collection
Analysis.Rmd - R markdown with the analysis and figures reported
bootstrap.R - separate R file for bootstrapping the First-In, First-Out model predictions (too slow to put in the Rmd)
mstrap.RData - R Data file containing the bootstrap samples of the best fit information processing rate (bits/0.147 ms)
cstrap.RData - R Data file containing the bootstrap samples of the best fit predicted surprisal weights

Data/
contains the raw data files for each participant.
*The presenation rate of the monitor for Participant 1 was 7ms per frame (144 Hz refresh rate). The monitor reset for Participants 4-8 and should be excluded from analysis. We resumed numbering at 12.

LM/ # Language Model
GrabGoogle.py - requires ZS. Extracts the relevant unigrams and bigrams from Google Ngrams
OptimizeLM.py - computes the log frequency and bigram surprisal for each word in the stories
ngrams.pkl - python dictionary storing bigram counts
nm1grams.pkl - python dictionary storing unigram counts
LangModelOut.csv - surprisal and log frequency in nats for all words in the story. Format: StoryCode, Position in story, Word, Surprisal, Log Frequency
