ODKScan_webapp

A Django app interface for ODK Scan

Starting from the VM Image:

  1. Log in with username "user" and password "password"
  2. Go to the users view and create a new users with your desired username and password.
  3. On the next screen give yourself superuser and staff status.
  4. Now delete the default "user" and log in with your new account.

Full setup directions:

Start with 32bit ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Older versions might not have the OpenCV apt package)

Install these dependencies:

sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install git python-setuptools python-imaging supervisor

Install Django:

sudo easy_install pip
#You may want to set this to version 1.5.1 in case later versions
#have any backwards compatibility issues.
#Don't try to user a version earlier than 1.4.0
sudo pip install django
sudo pip install docutils

Create the project:

django-admin.py startproject scan_admin
cd scan_admin
git clone git://github.com/UW-ICTD/ODKScan_webapp.git --recursive
#If this was forked you might need to alter the UW-ICTD part.

Install the webapp's pip dependencies:

cd ODKScan_webapp
sudo pip install -r requirements.pip

Install OpenCV and compile ODKScan-core:

sudo apt-get install libopencv-dev
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
# assuming you have a bashrc
echo 'export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib' >> ~/.bashrc
cd ODKScan-core
make
# coffee break

Configure the scan_admin project's settings.py:

  • set database engine to sqlite3 and name it with an absolute path, e.g.: /home/ubuntu/scan_admin/scan.db
  • Set MEDIA_ROOT to an absolute path, e.g.: /home/ubuntu/scan_admin/media/
  • Set MEDIA_URL to a path beginning with a slash, e.g.: /media/
  • Add "ODKScan_webapp" to INSTALLED_APPS and uncomment the admin entries.
  • Once everything is working set DEBUG to False. (And set ALLOWED_HOSTS)

Configure celery:

Waring: this is the easy way to configure celery. It has some limitations. To overcome them it may be a good idea to use a different message broker.

  • Add djcelery and djcelery.transport to INSTALLED_APPS in settings.py
  • Add BROKER_URL = 'django://' to settings.py
  • Put this in settings.py and wsgi.py
import djcelery
djcelery.setup_loader()

Now you copy the supervisordconf file in this repo to make celery automatically start on reboots.

sudo cp celeryd.conf /etc/supervisor/conf.d/celeryd.conf
sudo supervisorctl -c /etc/supervisor/supervisord.conf reload

Configure the scan_admin project's urls.py:

  • Uncomment all the admin stuff.
  • Paste the following at the bottom of the file:

Initialize the database:

This command will also prompt you to set up a super user account.

python manage.py syncdb

Run the app using a apache mod-wsgi server

Install the necessairy packages:

sudo apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-wsgi

Edit your httpd.conf file like so:

sudo pico /etc/apache2/httpd.conf

so that it contains this:

#Need to set the apache user so we have permissions to write/access files.
User ubuntu
Group ubuntu

Now restart the server for changes to take effect.

Alternative way to run the server:

It might be easier to use gunicorn to run the server:

sudo apt-get install gunicorn
cd scan_admin
#Use killall gunicorn_django to stop the server
sudo gunicorn_django -b 0.0.0.0:80 --daemon -w 4

The reason I prefer the apache setup I documented is that I have some experience using it in the past and the server automatically starts when the machine reboots.

Also, if you do this you'll need to figure out how to serve the static files.

Architecture

For the most part this application follows the structure of an ordinary Django app. Here's some links to documentation on the primary Django components in use:

Additional notes:

  • actions.py contains code for processing forms with ODK Scan, rendering transcription pages and generating csvs.
  • The ODKScan-core directory contains the image processing code which is also used in the android app.
  • The image processing is done on separate worker thread using Celery. This makes is so responces are not delayed and it throttles batch processing so only one images is done at a time.
  • The UI for the transcription interfaces is contained in static/transcription and in the templates directory.

Media

Most of the application data is stored in the MEDIA_ROOT directory. It is structured as follows:

One thing to keep in mind is that django does not delete file when their models are deleted, furthermore, the additional files genereated by Scan are not deleted either.

XLS Form Generator

This project includes a deprecated form generator accessible at xlsform/scan VR might be using. It has been replaced by XLSXGenerator, which is included in the static assets.

If it's safe to delete the legacy version, you can remove the following files and folders:

  • xlsform
  • templates/xlsform.html
  • static/formDrawer

Issues:

  • Multipage forms are not supported
  • CSV outputs do not perserve column order
