Git Enablement Server (GES)
A collection of browser-based and server-side components allowing
teams to start collaborating with very little set up, no specific
OS limitations and very relaxed software infrastructure requirement.

About the project:
===============================================
Why:

Aspirational slogan for the project is:
Maximum platforms. Minimum excuses. Maximum simplicity.
GES - This is how you say Yes to Git.

Preferred set up method:
Double-click, or as close to it as possible.

At this time, there is no git server package available that can provide
easy to set up, platform / server agnostic, rich client experience
for private single or team-based development. A number of conventions,
like historical preference for *nix-like OS and dependence on SSH make
current offering inflexible for some distributed development scenarios.

At this (starting) stage of its life the project is aspiring to provide
a simple git server featuring Git Smart HTTP protocol support (read this
as "no SSH needed to interoperate with the server"), with basic
web-based UI, simplest rights management and target on single empowered
or small workgroup users.

A loose comparison to this project would be a combination of (CGI-based)
git-http-backend server distributed with git and a cgit or gitweb interface.
That combination is the base-line functionality approximation. The upper-line
functionality limit is GitHubs and Gitorious of the world. This project aims
to be somewhere in between these two.

How:

In order to reach the optimal platform flexibility for both, the server and
the "client" components, at this time the project targets WSGI (Web Server
Gateway Interface)-compatible server platforms and consists of the
following components:
- git_http_backend.py - WSGI-compatible implementation of Git Smart HTTP server.
- sammy - JavaScript-based MVC toolkit allowing us to create an incredibly
  rich client-size experience while being completely free from tie-in to any
  server-size scripting technology.
- thin WSGI-based JSON-RPC server layer feeding data to sammy-based web client.

Dependencies
========================
* Python 2.6 (Developed against 2.6, 2.5+ might work, but never tested.)
* Git >= 1.6.6 (On the server and on the client side.)
* (optiona) WSGI-compatible server, expressly supporting WSGI 1.1 or covertly
  converting HTTP/1.1-style Chunked bodies to WSGI 1.0-compatible
  "sized" wsgi.input streams.
  Alternatively, a WSGI 1.0 compatible server that sits behind a reverse
  proxy which converts HTTP/1.1 Chunked bodies into HTTP/1.0 sized bodies.
  GES is shpped with CherryPy WSGI Server, which fulfills these requirements.

Installation
========================
In its simplest form, the installation is
See doc folder for more, deploymentmethod-specific examples.

License
========================
There are a log of 3rd party components shipped with the project.
Practically all of them are either MIT, BSD, or LGPL-licensed. These parts
are clearly accompanied with their specific license statements.
The only exception to the above is the code of the GES project itself.
It's GPL. See file named COPYING for license terms governing over the entire
project.
