Journal for Occupied Studies README

Overview

The Journal for Occupied Studies is an independent, New York-based journal for radical analysis and testimony on the global Occupy movement -- Issue 1 is available online at

http://occupiedstudies.org

This repository contains the Hyde content that powers the public JOS website.

Installing

Get started on GNU/Linux using:

git clone https://github.com/supervacuo/occupied-studies.git occupied-studies
cd occupied-studies
pip install -r requirements.txt
hyde gen
hyde serve

If you're not using pip, see requirements.txt for the list of Python packages you'll need to install.

Installation should be possible on other systems, too -- please get in touch if you notice any problems, or can contribute instructions for a new platform.

Features

  • Fully-justified text, supported by hyphenation using PyHyphen.
  • Several fine articles by JOS contributors ;)

To-do

  • Ability to organise content into multiple issues.
  • Automatically link to Flickr source images.
  • Lightbox for displaying in-article images.
  • Automatic pull-quotes.
  • Less markup-intensive author biography sections.

Bugs

  • Layout doesn't perform well on small screens (thanks to David Smith for the report).
  • Javascript-assisted navigation only works well in Firefox.

Please report any other problems using the Github "Issues" system, or directly by e-mail to website@occupiedstudies.org.

License

  • Contributors to the Journal have kindly made their articles available under the Creative Commons CC BY NC SA license.
  • Photos remain under the license terms of the photographers -- please see the articles in which they appear for more information.
