petit project - http://github.com/gardarh/petit

----------- What is this -------------
Petit is a small django project I created to be able to share
pictures, videos and such of my baby girl with friends and
family. It features the following:
 - Simple password feature - one password for all
 - Photo album (ability for comments)
 - Ability to embed videos from other sites (such as Vimeo or Youtube)
 - Ability to create diary entries
 - Guestbook

This is all simple django stuff. Everything is managed through the admin
page (/admin/) with the option to add image captions through the public
interface once logged in.

----------- Licence -------------
This code is released under the BSD license. Do whatever you want with it.
I'd love to get an email from you if you use this project and like it.

PS. If you make any great additions to the code I don't mind adding it
to the main branch.

----------- Installation requirements -------------
To make this stuff work you need a:
 - Working django installation (just download the tarball from djangoproject.com)
 - Working database (tested on MySQL but I guess others work as well)
 - A domain name (subdomain is fine of course)
 - Preferably something to server static stuff. Django is not good at
serving static stuff (nginx is good for this)

----------- Installation -------------
 - Deploy the website into a dir of your choice
(I recommend the scripts/checkout_and_update.sh script to do this)
 - Create:
    /media/uploaded
    /media/gallery/images
    /media/gallery/thumbnails
    /media/gallery/tmp
 - Let everything under /media be writable by web server process.
You can achieve this by giving the folders a 0775 permissions mask
and letting it belong to a group (say, www-writers) which contains
your build user and your www user.
 - Set up web servers, there are apache/nginx config examples in /scripts
 - Tune your localsettings.py, you can find an example in /scripts
 - Customize your CSS by adding a StyleSheetSection in the admin. You
can create as many as you like - they will all be combined.
 - You should be done. If you run into problems please email me (see below).

----------- Maintenance -------------
 - I recomment the scripts.checkout_and_update.sh script.
 - Note that when you are uploading images it can take a few minutes.
The only way I'm aware of to process images without blocking the
browser is to install a seperate server (e.g. some twisted server).
That would make this project vastly more complicated to deploy and
maintain. And requires me to do stuff. So I decided against it.
 - Side effects of this is that you might have to tune your web server,
both to accomodate huge .zip files and long processing time.
An example of this can be seen in scripts/nginx-config
